Top 10 Google Algorithm Changes of 2011

1.      Jan. 28: Attribution Update – Designed to help reduce spam levels on SERPs. This specifically targeted sites with unoriginal content; a way to make sure these pages are not ranked higher than where the content was originally published.
2.      Feb. 23: First Panda Update (Farmer Update) – Aimed at finding sites that write irrelevant content and then optimize it for rankings; often referred to as “content farms.” The launch initially impacted 12% of U.S. queries according to Search Engine Land.
3.      April 11: Panda update 2.0 – This incorporated Google searcher blocking data. If a user blocked a site during a search, Google would then take this into consideration when determining the worth of a website.
4.      May 9: Panda Update 2.1 – This update was very minor and many people did not notice a change. For this reason, the exact changes that occurred during the update were not discussed by Google.
5.      June 21: Panda update 2.2 – Once again, Google focuses on what experts now call “scraper detection.” The update focuses on content that is duplicated without your permission, or scraped (diversion and then republishing).
6.      July 22: Panda update 2.3 – This was another minor update that was pushed out manually. Google claims the update “incorporates new signals.” Quality score is determined now by a blend of unique content and link score for that content.
7.      Aug. 12: Panda update 2.4 – This update stated that all algorithmic search improvements will be rolled out to other languages. According to Google, the change impacted 6-9% of queries. Oddly enough, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages were omitted.
8.      Sep. 28: Panda update 2.5 – This was supposed to be a minor update according to Google. However, many small businesses lost visibility and traffic while many larger businesses, such as FoxNews.com, benefitted from the change. This caused an uproar from small businesses who saw it as a way to keep the “big names” on top.
9.      Nov. 18: Panda Update 3.1 – This update was named “3.1” because many felt that some of the minor updates after 2.5 (labeled 2.51, 2.5.2, and 2.5.3) should have been labeled “3.0.” This update was considered a minor algorithm date refresh and didn’t get much attention.
10. Dec. 1: Ten More Updates Announced – Although the updates are over for 2011, ten more updates were announced for 2012. This will affect businesses in the coming weeks, so many spend their time now, in 2011, trying to get ready. The new updates are said to focus on keyword density, keyword relevancy, and broken links.

Google Panda Good or Bad

At the beginning of 2011 Google introduced the new Panda update to its algorithm. When Google implemented this new update it devastated and shook up the online world for good. Many websites got hit negatively by the update and other websites were blessed with more traffic and increased rankings.
Now that the dust settled is Google Panda a good thing about things.

Do You Know What Google Panda Is?
Every other month Google always updates its search engine algorithms so that it can provide relevant search results for its users. There are a few factors that Google uses when scoring a website like the number of back links to the site, page loading times, user experience etc.  Google are always tweaking and changing these factors continuously.
Over the years Google has been riddled with spam, non relevant and low quality websites. So at the beginning of this year Google introduced a new update to its algorithm to deal with some of these problems, the update was called “Panda”.

What Happened?
When the Panda update was introduced many webmasters saw their websites drop in rankings and others saw their websites disappear from the rankings altogether.  Basically content farms, low quality websites, spam sites and any other site that was relevant got wiped out.

Do You Have A Low Quality Website?
No one is quite sure what Google deems as a “low quality website” but we can make an educated guess. Over this year we have seen websites that have duplicate content, less original content, copied or scraped content disappear or rank poorly.

We have also seen the disappearance of many auto blogs to a point where the “.CO” domain extension or TLD has been totally de-indexed because of poor quality websites.
Websites that curn out hundreds of articles and posts per day were also hit in a big way like article directories and various other sites.

Should I Worry About Panda?
It’ a twofold answer! If you have created your website using black hat and other unethical methods like comment spamming, content spinning, content scraping etc it is only a matter of time before your website is either penalised heavily or totally de-indexed.
On the other hand if you have been building your website with unique content and other white hat methods you have nothing to worry about because “Matt Cutts” stated that these types of sites will increase in rankings and authority over time.

How To Make My Website Google “Panda” Friendly?
It’s quite simple because all Google looking for are quality websites with top quality content on it. Now if you can create a website that ticks all these boxes then you will not have a problem.  Also right for human viewers and not for search engines.
There are a few other things that you can do to help your website to become more Google friendly one of the things that you should do is focus on your websites on-page SEO.  You join the no problem. So I have created a video walk-through of a free plug-in that can help you with this.
It is also a good idea to also focus on your off-page SEO like manual back linking and. I have a list of over 300 high PR websites where you can leave links you can find them here.

Keyword Strategies: How Much Does Google Influence Search Results?

Check out any “SEO basics” article these days, and the word “longtail” is bound to pop up. And if by chance you haven’t bothered to read any of those tips, longtail keywords basically refer to unique phrases around a popular search term. In other words, something ridiculously general like “business” isn’t going to help you very much as a target keyword. But something like “small business development strategie”? Now that’s a longtail keyword that might have some legs.
Unique phrases. High search volume. Low competition.
It’s SEO 101.
But an interesting inforgraphic from anupam-tiwari.blogspot.com has gotten some buzz recently that’s throwing the perceived value of longtail keyword phrases into question. Titled “How Google Killed the Long Tail”, it presents a slew of examples of how the changes Google has made over the years are pushing longtail phrases (the cornerstone of many keyword strategies these days) out of the spotlight.
You can see the full inforgraphic below, but here is one interesting tidbit that jumped out at me:

The search engine auto-fill is making a bigger difference than I realized.

These are the search suggestions that Google presents in the dropdown as you begin typing your search term. It gives the impression that the search engine is trying to “guess” the phrase you want to search for based on popular searches related to whatever you start typing.
But what the infographic suggests, however, is that by providing users with these popular phrases, the engine is actually enticing those users to select one of them rather than continuing to type their own unique search requests. (As a result, the infographic notes that the percent of unique searches are down as much as 9% from just a few years ago.) In the end, you could argue that this is directing users away from valuable longtail phrases and towards the ones that are already popular.
Now whether this is good or bad is up for debate – but the influence being exhibited here is certainly interesting.
What really struck me, however, was how there are instances when Google blatantly shows search results for phrases that aren’t even what the user searched for. The infographic presents the example of the phrase “weight loss estimator”, where the auto-fill suggests the related term, “weight loss calculator”. Naturally, as with any other auto-fill suggestion, the user is welcome to say “No thanks” and continue with their original search. However, even if you continue with “weight loss estimator”, Google still shows the results for the phrase “weight loss calculator”! (I tried it myself, it totally works.) It’s almost as if Google is saying, “We know you are looking for this phrase, but just trust us, this one is better.”
Bizarre. Anyway, there’s a lot of info in the complete infographic (thanks to Sally Ormand for sharing on Twitter, by the way), and it’s definitely worth checking out. Thoughts? Comments? Sound off below and let me know what jumps out at you.

Black Hat vs. White Hat: Link Building Techniques

Anyone with a working knowledge of search engine optimisation (SEO) will already know that link building is an integral part of the process. Link building strategies vary greatly from one agency to the next: some are more effective than others, and perhaps more importantly, some are more ethical than others.

All but the most well funded link building initiatives must face the prospect of compromise. With limited resources, there is a choice to be made between ethical link building and unethical. On the one hand, unethical link building can produce fast results and requires little investment of time. On the other hand, ethical link building is sustainable in the long run and does not risk the reputation of either agency or client. Unfortunately for agencies and clients alike, there is no clear dichotomy between ethical "white hat" techniques and unethical "black hat" techniques - a "grey hat" area covers many widely used link building processes.

Perhaps the most unethical black hat tool in the link builder's arsenal is hacking. Some unscrupulous agencies and individuals use computer code to generate new web pages on existing, high-value domains such as .gov web sites. These pages can harbour backlinks to a web site that is being promoted and pass significant value to the link destination. This is unethical, illegal and potentially very dangerous.

Other black hat tools include spam-based link building techniques, such as sending meaningless, automated blog comments to thousands and thousands of different blogs. The vast majority of these links will never see the light of day as most blog owners quickly learn that automatic approval is a recipe for disaster. Those that do will pass little relevance and value to the link destination, although results can be impressive due to sheer weight of numbers.

Everything becomes less clear when you enter grey hat territory. While there are no strict and commonly agreed definitions in place, grey hat techniques often include the use of fake social media accounts for promotional purposes and affiliate cookie stuffing. Article spinning is also considered grey hat - this is the practice of turning a single article into several pieces of 'unique' content, often using a computer program. Buying blog posts and articles is another area that is widely regarded as grey hat. By definition, grey hat practices are perhaps morally questionable but never against the law.

True white hat techniques are steeped in the spirit of internet search. Rather than exploiting flaws in search engine algorithms, white hat techniques rely on playing by the rules. This type of link building takes a substantial investment of time and money due to fierce competition for good ranking positions - but the results are always worth it because they will be sustainable in the long run. White hat techniques include guest blogging, link baiting, on-page optimisation and the regular publication of unique, quality content.

Link building ranges from the extremely crude, fast and unethical to the painstakingly precise, slow and ethical. Ultimately, businesses that engage in black hat SEO techniques risk themselves and their clients for the sake of short-term gains. Those that employ white hat SEO techniques will expend more resources for the same gains, but their work will continue to benefit clients for years to come.

Long live search marketing.

As the internet has grown to become a leading marketing platform, so too has the need for a greater understanding of search and a brand's positioning through search terms, with marketers under greater pressure than ever to ensure that their brand is as close to the top of their sector's search terms on the first page of Google. Tom Salmon, marketing director for Epiphany discusses the growth of search marketing.
Hands up if you’re a marketer and believe that everything you do works? If your hand is in the air, you are in the minority. According to Deloitte only 20% of senior marketers believe marketing is truly effective. Is there any other profession where so few senior people believe in what they do each and every day?
This fact, twinned with a financial climate that forces marketers to prove the value of what they do more than ever before and the ready availability of a mountain of data, means that I think it’s staggering that search marketing isn’t at the core of more brands' strategies.
Too many boards are being slow to see the benefits of search. Why? I think it’s down to two main reasons.
First, that many traditional marketers still don’t understand search and have been slow, or unwilling, to innovate and sell the benefit of digital’s rich data sets and analytics to their board. Search agencies should shoulder some of the blame for that, often unwilling to share knowledge about techniques and approaches for fear of SEO and PPC being taken in house. However, a white paper published by the Chartered Institute of Marketing ‘The Future of Marketing’ illustrated that marketers are often culturally their own worst enemy, ‘failing to account for their often considerable budgets, falling back on dull and uninspiring campaigns and floundering when questioned on the financial impact of their strategies’.
Second: many boards are seeing search marketing as a traditional advertising cost. I’d advise any marketer trying to get his or her board to take search marketing seriously, especially creative PPC, to set up a P&L report outside of the organisation’s marketing budget purely to track the ROI on search marketing campaigns. Good search marketing is an investment, not a cost.
Offering measurability, scientific rigour and exact targeting search marketing allows marketers to deploy well established marketing techniques in a new digital context and to measure their success in a way that have never been possible before. PR, creative content, copywriting, market segmentation, web development, social marketing, DM and other marketing staples can all be given a new focus and given a new set of metrics through search.
Mark J. Penn and E.Kinney Zalesne explain in their best seller Microtrends, "People have never been so sophisticated, more individualistic, or more knowledgeable about the choices they make in their daily lives. Yet... it takes intensive, scientific study to find logical patterns that underlie those choices.” This is a point that Duncan Watts of Yahoo! Research picked up on when he said that marketing is going to become a much more science-driven activity. Marketers who fail to adapt to that this shift in the use of data and analytics are going to get left behind.
From the customers’ perspective, search marketing is useful because it doesn’t interrupt their daily life as an uninvited distraction. A search focused brand (being there when the customer is warm to or in need of its services or products) is more useful than one that insists on deploying old techniques to interrupt people’s lives with irrelevant noise. For example, YouTube’s use of skippable ads on relevant video content (only chargeable to the advertiser if they are actually watched) is brilliant for both marketers and audiences. It’s time for search marketing to be a staple item (not to say the only item) in every marketer’s campaign toolkit.
Consumers have instant access to information. That gives marketers a great opportunity to flip the conventional marketing communications mind set. The starting point should no longer be about how you can reach your customers but rather how easy and attractive it is for them to reach you. Marketers have a choice. Be the brand and voice that gives the consumer the information every time they hit the search icon or face irrelevance.
There isn’t another combination of marketing channel and communications approach that allows marketers to be consistently in the right place and at the right time for their potential customers. This is the reason that I find it extraordinary that search isn’t understood by more of the marketing community.
Mobile, social and local are the three buzzwords set to dominate search in 2012. Google estimates that only 17% of UK business sites are optimised for mobile, and yet more and more traffic is coming from non-PC devices (mobiles, tablets, TVs). According to Cisco’s VNI global IP traffic forecast) only 3% of Internet traffic originated with non-PC devices in 2010, but by 2015 the non-PC share of internet traffic will grow to 15%. Google+ also has the promise of customers being able to see sites, brands and services that their friends recommend, bringing a new social dimension to people’s search experience.
Innovative search marketing brings together recognisable disciplines and elements of the traditional marketing mix and reapplies them to twenty-first century screen culture. Good marketing is still about creating useful, interesting and influential ideas but now you can measure the results scientifically. There is no excuse for marketers anymore. It’s time to step up and get accountable, to innovate and get to grips with a new analytical approach to marketing.

13 Essential On-Page SEO Tips for Blogs

In short, there are two kinds (SEO) that affect the search engine rankings of your blog, the off-page and the on-page factors.

The off-page factors are the external, incoming links to your blog, trustworthiness of the domain and such. Some of these can be optimized by a blogger, by building links through legitimate methods and keeping the blog clean of illegal or borderline content. However, for the most part, off-page SEO is something a blogger won’t do directly (e.g. other people linking back to you).

The on-page factors are the internal aspects, everything a reader and a search engine sees on the blog and individual web pages. For the on-page factors, a blogger has full control to make the required modifications in order to make the blog as SEO-friendly as possible. Thus it makes sense to focus your initial SEO efforts for the on-page and build a foundation for the long-term search engine optimization.

There are certain tasks that only need to be done once, e.g. domain registration and optimizing the settings for the blogging platform and theme or template. And then there are tasks that you can pay attention to when writing and publishing individual pages and blog posts. This post presents the 13 most important things a blogger should do for the blog’s on-page SEO.

1 Use Relevant Keywords for the Domain Name

There are many blogs that have done OK without having keyword phrased blog and domain name, which might be better for branding purposes, just take a look at Twitter or Facebook for example. But for SEO, the blog’s name and domain name should be the main keyword phrase of your blog, or closely related to it.

The domain of the blog usually matches the blog’s name and it is beneficial to optimize both the blog’s name and domain with good keyword phrase. If you already have an established blog, this is done already. If you’re starting a new blog, use a little time to come up with good name for the blog, with good keywords or a phrase, and register a domain with those keywords.

2 Optimize the Keywords in the Title Tag

The title tag of a web page is the most important on-page search engine ranking factor. Title tag is not directly the same as the headline of a blog post for example. Title tag of a page is usually shown on the top left corner of the browser, and in the HTML code of the page, it’s the text between and tags in the header section of the HTML-page.

In blogs, the title tag is defined by the blogging platform. It depends on the configuration of the blogging software, the theme or template, or use of plugins and addons, how this can be optimized on your blog. In WordPress, the title tag can be optimized through the WP theme or by a plugin, like All in One SEO Pack. Similarly in other blogging platforms, the title tag can be optimized with extensions or by editing the template.

Whatever method is used, the title tag should be optimized for different pages of the blog by including the keyword phrase of that particular page. On the front page, the title tag should include the blog’s name and possibly the tagline, with the order of these two depending on the keywords you’re trying to optimize. As the keywords at the beginning of the title tag are slightly more important than the others, put the blog’s name first if the name is your main keyword phrase, otherwise, include the tagline first.

In the archive pages, like category- or tag-pages, the title tag can be the category name and the blog name. For individual pages and posts, the title tag should match the main headline. This way, you can optimize the title tag by including the keywords phrases on the headlines when you’re writing them.

3 Write Great Headlines

In addition to optimizing the title tag, the blog theme or template should use the different headline tags efficiently. This means that the H1 headline tag should be used for the main headline of the page, which for the home page is the blog’s name or the tagline, and for the individual pages, the main headline of the page or post.

This requires that the theme uses different headline tags for different pages. Otherwise, the H1 headline is always on the blog’s name, even on individual posts, or even worse, there is not H1 tag, just H2 and onwards. So ensure that the theme you’re using has these things covered. You can check this by viewing the HTML source code of the individual pages in your blog and looking for the H1 title. If the H1 tag stays on the blog’s name on all pages, including individual posts, you need to tweak the theme or ask for an update from the theme developer.

With SEO-friendly theme, both the title tag and H1 can be optimized by writing great headlines and including relevant keyword phrases in them, if possible. I say this, because great headlines are not only important for SEO, but for your readers as well, so don’t compromise the headlines power by making it just about your keywords.

4 Pay Attention to the Anchor Text in Your Links

The external, incoming links to your blog are very important, but those are off-page factors as mentioned at the beginning. But the links, and the anchor text used in them, are important for on-page optimization as well. Always add links to your own posts and pages with relevant keywords and phrases. Alternate the phrases a bit, for example using different variations like singular and plural form.

The links are more important to the “receiving” end, whether the link is external or internal, but the links and anchor texts are important for the page they are in as well. Because of this, it is good to link out to other blogs and your other posts from every post you write, using optimized anchor texts. Yes, your link will give “link juice” to the other blog more when you link out, but it does help your on-page SEO as well. This is often overlooked when people think about SEO.

5 Write a Perfect First Paragraph to Every Post

If writing great headline is important to grab the attention and SEO, the next important factor is the first paragraph of the article. This should capture the reader to read the rest of the article. No amount of SEO will help if visitors that do come in (taken that your headline is good enough) leave immediately because the beginning of the post isn’t written well enough.

But as we’re talking more about SEO than writing, try to include the main keyword phrase for the post into the first paragraph and the beginning of the post, namely the first 50-100 words.

6 Manually Add Informative Description to the Meta Tag Description

Meta tag description can be found from the head section of the HTML page. In the early days of the web, search engines relied heavily on the meta fields, like keywords and description, in order to rate and rank the pages. But this is no longer true. However, the meta description is very important for another search related factor, but not search engine rankings.

OK, so the meta description (and the meta keywords) has very little effect on the search engine rankings. So, why meta description is included on this post then? Simple, the meta description will show up in the search engine results. If the searched phrase is in the description, the description will be used and depending on the search engine, the phrase might even be highlighted.

So the main purpose of the meta tag description is to increase click-through rate from the search engine results pages to your blog, so it’s a different kind of SEO, not the usual which aims for higher rankings. If you don’t add meta tag description manually, the beginning of the post is usually used automatically (yet another reason to write great, descriptive and attention-grabbing first paragraph).

You should write the description manually, to ensure it is properly optimized (and catchy enough to lure new visitors from the search engine). How you achieve this, depends on the software or service. Unfortunately in free blogging services like Blogger, this can’t be done very easily. But on self-hosted WordPress, installing All in One SEO pack will take care of this, enabling you to manually add and edit the description if any post or page.

7 Use the Best Permalink Structure for SEO

In addition to the keywords on the domain name, the keywords in the rest of the URL matter as well. In the blogosphere, this is called the permalink. The permalink should always include the post name, sometimes referred to as the post slug, e.g. this posts default slug might be “13-essential-on-page-seo-tips-for-blogs”.

The post slug can be optimized even further by editing it manually, e.g. removing the irrelevant words from the slug, like “a”, “the” and such. Or the slug can be very short, which also makes the URL more convenient, while adding the keyword relevance to the used phrase or word. This kind of shortened postname in the permalink is known as SEO slug.

Other elements that can go into the permalink like year, month and day or numeric post id can, and in some case should, be included as well, not just the post name. Arguably, the best permalink for SEO is either just the postname (/%postname%/ in WP) or category + postname (/%category%/%postname%/). Personally I prefer numeric post ID + post name for both SEO and performance reasons (/%post_id%/%postname%/ in WordPress).

8 Use Keywords in Sub-Headlines When Applicable

Sub-headlines (H2-H6 headline tags) have relatively low importance search engine ranking factor, but it’s still worth to use keyword phrases in them when possible.

In addition to the SEO benefits, important aspect of the sub-headlines is to pace the flow of the text and make the text more scannable, which is important in online media. So use sub-headlines, and make them keyword rich if possible, but focus on using them as a tool to improve readability.

9 Always Add (a Keyword Phrased) Alt-Text to Images

Using alt-text on all your images is a must. First, it’s an accessibility issue, for people who don’t see the images or have disabled them on their browser, and secondly because alt-texts are good for SEO as well.

In addition to giving the images a good alt-name, also use keywords in the file name of the image. This is a small thing will also improve your SEO.

By optimizing your image names and alt-texts for search engines, you increase the chances of getting those images into the image searches as well.

10 Don’t Go Overboard with Repeating the Keyword Phrase

If you have all the above covered, you don’t have to worry much about using keywords in the rest of the text. It is good to use the phrase when it fits the text, but more importantly, don’t repeat any keyword phrase too many times.

This is called keyword stuffing and it has high negative effect on your search engine rankings. Thus, keep the keywords usage at bay and don’t fill your title tag, headline or the body text with too many repetitions of a keyword phrase. Use synonyms instead and just focus on writing a great post.

11 Create Unique, Valuable Content

If you copy the content for your blog from somewhere else, it will have negative effect on your rankings. This is sometimes called the duplicate content penalty.

There are lot of myths and theories about the real effect of duplicate content penalty, but the fact is that filling your blog with copied (or even stolen) content won’t help your blog at all; it can only make it worse.

You should avoid copying content, partly because of the negative effect for your blog, possibly labeling your blog as spam blog (or splog as they are called) and more importantly, copied content won’t bring much value to your readers.

Referring and using cites, always linking back to the original source, and adding your own insights is fine and a good practice, but for the most part, your blog should be filled with original content.

12 Keep Your Blog Fresh

Search engines don’t like outdated content. Or the other way around, search engines, especially Google, love websites that are updated regularly. And hey, blogs are perfect for that, designed to deliver fresh content consistently.

Don’t let your blog stay abandoned for too long, so try to post as often as you can, keep the blog filled with fresh content. You don’t have to post multiple times a day or even once a day if that doesn’t fit your, but choose a blogging schedule and stick with it.

Over time, the search engines will learn how often you update the blog, visit and crawl your pages more frequently, and increase the chance to give your blog the much needed rankings.

13 Deploy Useful Hierarchy and Navigation on Your Blog

As the last on page seo tips, ensure your blog has clear, useful hierarchy and navigation in place. This means linking to relevant posts internally, using category and tags intelligently on the posts and having clear navigation options available to the user at all times.

Your sites usability will make the experience more pleasant for the reader and the search engines will like it too. It helps them to find the other related posts and pages, and for the search engines, helps in the categorization of your content.

With these on-page SEO tips, you will cover the most important search engine optimization needs on your blog. The next step is to keep creating great content and start building links back to your blog.

I hope you enjoyed this article and please, share this with your friends, as I’m sure it’ll help them to improve their SEO skills as well.
